KakaoTalk

KakaoTalk is the free messaging app from Kakao Corp., the South Korean internet company. It handles one-on-one and group chats with friends, family and colleagues, plus Open Chat, a way to find and join communities around shared interests and see trending topics without entering a room. Chats can be sorted into folders, sent messages can be edited or deleted, and a Threads feature keeps side discussions in a group from getting lost. Voice Talk and Face Talk support group calls of up to 10 people, with screen sharing and visual effects during video calls. Photos, videos and files can be shared in a tap, and each user has a profile whose visibility can be set per chat room. Recent updates added text formatting such as bold, italic, strikethrough and lists, suggested mini emoticon combos, and the option to register a phone as a secondary device. It is the everyday messenger for many people in Korea and for anyone keeping in touch with them. Apple named it in its October 22, 2026 iPhone Duo announcement, and the latest release notes describe an improved interface for larger screens that shows the chat list and its content together.

Features

• One-on-one and group chats with folders and Threads
• Open Chat communities with real-time trends
• Group Voice Talk and Face Talk for up to 10 people
• Screen sharing during calls
• Text formatting: bold, italic, strikethrough and lists

In its October 22, 2026 iPhone Duo announcement, Apple says KakaoTalk lets users keep track of multiple chats and groups while diving into a specific conversation, without switching back and forth. KakaoTalk's version 26.9.2 release notes describe an improved interface for larger screens that shows the list and content together, without naming iPhone Duo. No outer-display or half-open behaviour is described. DuoDiscover has not yet tested KakaoTalk on a device.
